In fact, I can’t really remember the last time I saw one on a menu.

This is fine though. You probably shouldn’t be ordering it in a restaurant anyway for the same reason that you shouldn’t order a ham and cheese. Just save your money and make the sandwich at home.

This sucker might look more complicated than that, but if you can make a ham and cheese sandwich and french toast, then you can make a Monte Cristo Sandwich. There’re a few little tricks though that makes all the different. (SPOILER: Third piece of bread!)

How to make the perfect classic Monte Cristo sandwich. Ingredients are simple. It’s all about the method! You’ll never make a normal grilled cheese again!

You’ll Need:

3 slices white sandwich bread

1/4 pound ham (or turkey)

1/2 cup grated gouda cheese

2 teaspoons mayonnaise (opt.)

1 large egg

2 tablespoons milk

1 teaspoon paprika

Salt and pepper

2 tablespoons butter, for cooking

Instructions:

Lay out three slices of sandwich bread. Split grated cheese between two slices of bread. (You can sub smoked gouda if you want). Top cheese with sliced ham.

Lightly spread mayo on BOTH sides of the third piece of bread. Place the mayo piece of bread on top of one of the two sides. Then flip the other ham/cheese side on top so the mayo piece of bread is in between the two sides, creating a two layer sandwich. The cheese should be on the outsides of the sandwich.

Slices the ends off the sandwich and press it with some weight to really compact the layers. You can just cover it with a flat plate or cutting board and press on it gently for a few seconds.

Whisk together the egg, milk, paprika, and a pinch of salt and pepper.

Heat butter in a small skillet over medium heat.

When butter is melted, dredge pressed sandwich in the egg mixture, coating all sides. Immediately move sandwich to the skillet. Cook for 3-4 minutes per side until sandwich is golden brown. Also, upend the sandwich to cook on the ends for about 15 seconds per side.

Sandwich is done cooking when it is a dark golden brown and cheese is completely melted. Cut sandwich in half and serve immediately!

You’ll Need:

1 lb. ground beef

1 packet taco seasoning mix (or homemade taco seasoning)

1 tube Pillsbury Pizza Dough

5 colby jack and cheddar cheese sticks, halved

4 tbsp butter, melted

1 tsp garlic powder

1 tsp dried parsley

Instructions:

Preheat oven to 425 degrees F.

Lightly coat a large baking sheet with non-stick spray and set aside.

Cook the ground beef in a skillet, breaking up with a wooden spoon until fully browned and crumbled. Drain any fat and return skillet to stove top. Mix in the taco seasoning packet (but no water), and stir until fully coated. Remove from heat and let cool to room temperature.*

Spread the pizza dough out until it’s flat and cut in half lengthwise and then 4 cuts up and down, creating a total of 10 small rectangles. Place about a tablespoon or more of the taco meat in the center of each pizza dough, top with a halved cheese stick and then carefully roll up the pizza stick, making sure to pinch all seams closed.

Combine the melted butter, garlic powder and parsley in a small bowl and brush it on the tops of the cheesy taco sticks. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes or until golden brown on top. Serve hot with your favorite taco toppings!

NOTES:

*You can use leftover taco meat in this recipe. But if you do make the full 1 lb. of ground beef, you will have lots of leftover taco meat, so you can freeze it and save for later use!

For example, I use cream of chicken soup in my cheesy chicken and rice bake but you could just as easily use cream of mushroom and it would be delicious. For use IN a dish, you may want to chop the mushrooms into smaller pieces. Or not. It’s really a personal preference.

You can also enjoy it by itself, because it’s delicious and creamy and filling.

My version of cream of mushroom soup is low carb which makes it perfect for keto diet followers, but those who don’t follow a low carb diet won’t even notice the changes I made to make it low carb. My family didn’t.
Covered in a perfect crust that is dip-able, you won’t be able to get enough of this crispy chicken recipe! Personally, when it comes to weekends, I am ready to take it easy on the cooking but I still want something delicious. That is where this Baked Parmesan Crusted Chicken will be your partner.

This version is also so much easier and keeps the kitchen cleaner – whenever I try to deep or pan fry anything I end up cleaning little bits of oil off everything! Let the oven do the work for you.

I also love that this recipe is so budget friendly.

I usually have all these ingredients on hand in the pantry, so all I need to do is either buy or thaw chicken and dinner is basically done.

Ingredients:

4 Chicken breasts boneless, skinless

1 cup panko bread crumbs

1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese

3 tablespoons minced parsley

Salt & pepper to taste

3 Tablespoons melted butter

3 Tablespoons fresh lemon juice

2 garlic cloves minced

Instructions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Chop up your parsley and garlic.

Slice the chicken into "fingers" - cutting lengthwise and cutting thicker pieces in half again, for even thickness throughout.

Mix the bread crumbs, parmesan cheese, parsley, salt, and pepper together in a shallow dish.

In a second dish, mix the butter, lemon juice and garlic together.

Dip both sides of the chicken in the butter mixture, and then repeat with the crumb mixture until the chicken is fully breaded.

Place the chicken in a casserole dish or cookie sheet and repeat with all chicken fingers.

Bake for 20-25 minutes until an inserted thermometer reads 165F.

NOTES:

Chicken is amazingly easy to make!

This is a twist on a classic chicken fingers but done in the oven instead.

The Parmesan helps the flavor and seals in a moist chicken.

Fried chicken is great, but you will not be disappointed with how your panko turns out

As a shortcut, make a meal of rice and beans, which provides a bowl full of plant-based protein (20 to 25 grams) and fiber (about 15 grams). Beans and rice don't have to be boring! One study published in the journal Appetite in 2007 found that people who ate soup before consuming a lunch entrée ended up downing 20 percent fewer calories overall than people who skipped soup. Adding vegetables and protein to your soup also helps keep you fuller longer, so you'll be less hungry later on. Take Nicoise salad: a couple of cans of tuna (in olive oil is best), hard-cooked eggs, steamed green beans, tomatoes, and olives, dressed with vinaigrette. It's heaven on a plate that just happens to be loaded with protein, fiber, and healthy fats. To serve the salad chilled, prep it early or the day before. Martha Stewart makes a mean Nicoise salad you'll want to make again and again. Note: Your best choice for seafood is chunk light tuna, which comes from the smaller skipjack or yellowfin and has less mercury than canned white albacore tuna, according to the Environmental Defense Fund.

No-bake vegan chocolate tart

Chocolate lovers, let go of your guilt: Unsweetened cocoa powder has about two grams of fiber per tablespoon, plus iron, manganese, magnesium, and zinc. This recipe is simple and will give you soft, chewy muffins in no time. Enjoy them with butter or your favorite jam!

This recipe turned out to be a winner and it’s actually quite simple. Simply mix the ingredients in a stand mixer and let the dough rise, then shape and cook.

WHY THIS HOMEMADE ENGLISH MUFFINS RECIPE WORKS

Bread flour is used to give the muffins a chewy texture.

The dough is sticky! A sticky dough means there’s optimal hydration to yield nooks and crannies that English muffins are known for.

The muffins are toasted on the stovetop then baked in the oven. Baking them ensure the middle is completely done.

You’ll Need:

2 cups (480 ml) whole milk

3 tablespoons honey

2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast, (1 packet)

1 large egg

4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

5 cups (650 g) bread flour

1 and 1/2 teaspoon salt

cornmeal for dusting

Instructions:

In a small saucepan, heat the milk and honey over low heat until it reaches 105-115ºF. Remove from heat, stir in the yeast, and set aside for 5 mins. Whisk in the egg and melted butter.

Add the flour and salt to the bowl of a stand mixer. Fit the mixer with the dough hook attachment. with the mixer on low speed, gradually pour the milk mixture into the flour.

Continue to beat on low until the flour is incorporated, stop and scrape down the sides and bottom as needed. Turn the speed up to medium and mix for about 4 minutes, until the dough is smooth and sticky.

Scrape the dough out into a lightly oiled bowl. Brush a little oil over the top of the dough. Cover and set in a warm place to rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size.

Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface, using as little flour as possible, gently knead the dough together. (The dough is very sticky. Add just enough flour to make it easy to handle.)

Divide the dough in half. Divide each half into 8 equal sized pieces. You should have 16 dough balls. (If you want smaller muffins, divide each half into 11 pieces to equal 22 dough balls.) Roll each piece into a ball and flatten the ball into a disk.

Place the disks on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper that has been dusted with cornmeal. Sprinkle more cornmeal over the tops. Cover with a lint-free towel and set in a draft-free place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

Preheat the oven to 325ºF.

Heat a griddle over medium-low heat. Gently lift each disk with a plastic spatula and place it on the griddle. (Handle the dough with care so you don't deflate it) Cook them for about 2 minutes on each side, until lightly browned on both sides. Work in batches.

Place the muffins back on the cookie sheet and bake them for 10-15 minutes.

Transfer the muffins to a cooling rack and let them cool completely.

Split the English muffins with a fork and toast them a toaster until the edges are lightly browned. Serve warm with your favorite jam or butter.

MAKE AHEAD TIP:

Muffins are good for up 5 days stored in an airtight container at room temperature or in the refrigerator.

Muffins can also be wrapped in plastic wrap, sealed in a zip-top bag, and frozen for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator and toast before serving.

NOTES:

To get muffins that are uniform in size, I suggest weighing the dough. For 16 muffins, each portion of dough should weigh 60 grams.

The key to french toast sticks that are stiff enough to pick up without flopping is to use stale bread and to use a block loaf you can cut yourself into thick slices (the thicker the sticks, the less they flop). This is the way I like my french toast sticks, but if you don’t have a stale block loaf, it still tastes just as delicious using pre-sliced sandwich bread, it will just sag a bit when you pick it up.

I really do recommend using stale bread where possible for french toast – any french toast. It makes a huge difference because fresh bread soaks up too much egg mixture – even if you dunk it in really quickly – and you’ll end up with french toast that is soggy on the inside.

This recipe only takes about 15 minutes to make, and is super easy. French Toast you can eat with your fingers – something that no kid, big and small, can possibly resist!

You’ll Need:

4 thick slices white bread, preferably stale (Note 1)

2 eggs

1/4 cup milk

Salt

1/3 cup white sugar

1 tsp cinnamon powder

3 tbsp butter

Maple syrup to serve (optional)

Instructions:

Remove crust of each slice, then cut each into 3 equal thick batons.

Combine the eggs, milk and a pinch of salt in a bowl large enough to roll the bread sticks in.

Combine the cinnamon and sugar on a plate.

Melt 2 tbsp of the butter in a large pan over medium high heat.

Roll the sticks in the egg mixture quickly (do not soak them), shake off excess and place in pan. Cook in 2 batches.

Turn to cook each side until golden.

Immediately transfer to the plate with the cinnamon sugar and roll to coat. It's important to do this quickly while they are hot straight out of the pan so it sticks.

Melt remaining butter and cook the remaining french toast sticks.

Serve immediately with maple syrup to dunk the sticks in.

NOTES:
1. Cut the slices thick enough so when you cut the crusts off then cut into 3 batons, the slices are thick, square batons about 1.7 cm / 2/3" thick.
French toast is best made using stale bread. Fresh bread soaks up too much egg mixture, making it soggy on the inside and your sticks will flop when you pick them up.
2. It is best to use a loaf so you can cut thick slices as the thicker the sticks are (and the staler the bread is), the stiffer the sticks are (ie. they won't flop when picked up using fingers).

For me, as a kid growing up in New York, fried chicken came from one place, and one place only: those grease-stained cardboard buckets peddled by the Colonel himself. But times have changed, and as is often the case, revisiting those fond childhood memories results only in disappointment and disillusionment.

That said, stylistically, it can't be faulted. So I figured that I could somehow manage to take what the Colonel started and bring it to its ultimate conclusion—that is, deep chicken flavor; a flab-free skin; juicy, tender meat; and crisp, spicy coating—I might just be able to recapture those first fleeting childhood tastes of fried chicken as I remembered them. Here's the result of my efforts.

Why It Works

An intensely flavored buttermilk brine tenderizes the chicken while keeping it moist.

Adding wet ingredients to the dry flour coating ensures an extra-craggy crust with lots of nooks and crannies.

Starting in hot fat and finishing in the oven gives you fried chicken with a crisp crust and evenly cooked meat.

You’ll Need:

2 tablespoons paprika

2 tablespoons freshly ground black pepper

2 teaspoons garlic powder

2 teaspoons dried oregano

1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper

1 cup buttermilk

1 large egg

Kosher salt

One whole chicken, about 4 pounds, cut into 10 pieces or 3 1/2 pounds bone-in, skin-on breasts, legs, drumsticks, and/or wings

1 1⁄2 cups all-purpose flour

1⁄2 cup cornstarch

1 teaspoon baking powder

4 cups vegetable shortening or peanut oil

Instructions:

Combine the paprika, black pepper, garlic powder, oregano, and cayenne in a small bowl and mix thoroughly with a fork.

Whisk the buttermilk, egg, 1 tablespoon salt, and 2 tablespoons of the spice mixture in a large bowl. Add the chicken pieces and toss and turn to coat. Transfer the contents of the bowl to a gallon-sized zipper-lock freezer bag and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, and up to overnight, flipping the bag occasionally to redistribute the contents and coat the chicken evenly.

Whisk together the flour, cornstarch, baking powder, 2 teaspoons salt, and the remaining spice mixture in a large bowl. Add 3 tablespoons of the marinade from the zipper-lock bag and work it into the flour with your fingertips. Remove one piece of chicken from the bag, allowing excess buttermilk to drip off, drop the chicken into the flour mixture, and toss to coat. Continue adding chicken pieces to the flour mixture one at a time until they are all in the bowl. Toss the chicken until every piece is thoroughly coated, pressing with your hands to get the flour to adhere in a thick layer.

Adjust an oven rack to the middle position and preheat the oven to 350°F. Heat the shortening or oil to 425°F in a 12-inch straight-sided cast-iron chicken fryer or a large wok over medium-high heat. Adjust the heat as necessary to maintain the temperature, being careful not to let the fat get any hotter.

One piece at a time, transfer the coated chicken to a fine-mesh strainer and shake to remove excess flour. Transfer to a wire rack set on a rimmed baking sheet. Once all the chicken pieces are coated, place skin side down in the pan. The temperature should drop to 300°F; adjust the heat to maintain the temperature at 300°F for the duration of the cooking. Fry the chicken until it’s a deep golden brown on the first side, about 6 minutes; do not move the chicken or start checking for doneness until it has fried for at least 3 minutes, or you may knock off the coating. Care- fully flip the chicken pieces with tongs and cook until the second side is golden brown, about 4 minutes longer.

Transfer the chicken to a clean wire rack set on a rimmed baking sheet and place in the oven. Cook until an instant-read thermometer inserted into the thickest part of the breast registers 150°F and the legs register 165°F, 5 to 10 minutes; remove the chicken pieces to a second rack or a paper-towel-lined plate as they reach their final temperature. Season with salt and serve—or, for extra-crunchy fried chicken, go to step 7.

Place the plate of cooked chicken in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour, and up to overnight. When ready to serve, reheat the oil to 400°F. Add the chicken pieces and cook, flipping them once halfway through cooking, until completely crisp, about 5 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack set on a rimmed baking sheet to drain, then serve immediately.

I rely on Cook’s Illustrated (great magazine) for a perfect roast chicken, and now I’ll share my secrets to cooking the perfect grass fed steak at home on your stovetop.

This is especially useful if you don’t have a grill or if you want a steak in a hurry. You’ll be surprised just how fast, easy, and delicious it is.

Ingredients:

1 - 4 eight ounce grass fed strip steaks or ribeyes (can cook in batches if necessary)

1-2 tbsp Kerrygold butter

Handful of freshly chopped herbs you like: tarragon, thyme, chives, for example

sea salt

freshly ground black pepper

Instructions:

Let the steaks come to room temp for about an hour prior to cooking.

Chop any fresh herbs you are using. You can use the herbs for a compound butter or to sprinkle over the finished steak.

Rub steaks on both sides with olive oil and coat both sides liberally with sea salt and pepper.

Heat skillet over high heat (but not full blast) for at least 5 minutes. I recommend cast iron.

Drop about 1-2 tbsp kerrygold (depending on skillet size) and let it melt. It will smoke, but don't let it brown too much.

Place steaks in the skillet and let them cook undisturbed for 2-4 minutes depending on thickness and how done you want it. It should have a nice crust on the cooked side when you flip it.

Flip and cook an additional 1-4 minutes until desired doneness.

Remove and let rest for about 10 minutes. If using compound butter, put a pat on top after you remove steaks while they're resting, or sprinkle with the fresh herbs.

Plate and enjoy!

It was a perfect chocolate bundt cake that looked so rich and fudgy and moist I HAD to try it! Especially after listening to the kids rave about how good it was.

And, oh my goodness, was it ever delicious! This cake doesn’t need any frosting at all! I spooned a little melted icing and chocolate chips on the one pictured here because I wanted it to be extra beautiful for y’all but it really doesn’t need anything extra.

This cake is sorta like a mix between a brownie and a cake. It's thick and fudgy and just BEGS to be eaten with a cold glass of milk or a hot cup of coffee!

Ingredients:

1 16-oz. carton sour cream

1 egg

1 chocolate cake mix

1 box instant chocolate pudding mix

1 bag chocolate chips (see notes)

Instructions:

Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Grease and flour a bundt pan well (I use the cooking spray with the flour in it) then set aside.

Combine sour cream and egg in a large bowl or stand-mixer (fitted with paddle attachment) then stir or blend until combined. Add cake mix and pudding mix then stir or blend until mixed well. Stir or blend in chocolate chips (reserving 1/3 cup for garnish if desired) until evenly combined.

Bake at 325 degrees for 45-55 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean. Cool in pan for 30 minutes then invert onto a serving plate to finish cooling.

Garnish with powdered sugar if desired. Cover and store at room temperature.

NOTES:

This cake doesn’t need any frosting but you can make a simple glaze or heat a small amount of prepared chocolate frosting for 30 seconds then drizzle over the cooled cake. Garnish with reserved chocolate chips if desired.

Use regular or mini chocolate chips.

I suggest using your stand mixer with paddle attachment because this batter is THICK.

This recipe uses a standard size (15-16 oz) cake mix, a regular size (10-12 oz) bag of chocolate chips and regular size (4-serving) pudding mix.

Do not prepare the pudding – just use the dry mix.

I think this could be made in a 13x9 baking pan. Cook for 20-25 then test with a toothpick.

I also think these would be great cooked in a muffin tin. Cook for 15-20 then test with a toothpick.

It is the glorious “cooking process” of life; one where a little heat, or a little pressure, or a little fermentation, or a little flame, will sear, tenderize, aerate, and soften the ingredient (me) changing it into something mouthwatering, pleasurable and flavorful to partake in—something more rich and complex, more nourishing ultimately, than it was before the process was applied.

And there is fresh hope in that.

Ingredients:
• 2 rib eye steaks (about 1 pound each), trimmed of excess fat and cubed
• Salt
• Black pepper
• 4 tablespoons flour, divided use
• 2 tablespoons butter
• 2 tablespoons avocado (or olive) oil
• 2 small white onions, quartered and sliced
• 16 ounces (1 pound) sliced mushrooms
• 4 cloves garlic, pressed through garlic press
• 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
• 1 cup ale
• 6 cups beef stock, hot
• 1 tablespoon chopped flat-leaf parsley
• 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves

Instructions:

Add the cubed steak to a large bowl, sprinkle with a couple of good pinches of salt and black pepper, as well as 2 tablespoons of the flour, and toss to coat.

Place a large soup pot over medium-high heat, add in the butter and the oil, and once melted together and super hot, add in the steak cubes and brown on all sides, about 3 minutes or so (steak should be rare on the inside, you only want color on the outside); remove from pot and set aside.

Add into the pot a drizzle more oil if needed, and add in the onions and the mushrooms, along with a pinch or two of salt and pepper, and saute those together for about 10-12 minutes or so, until slightly golden.

Stir in the garlic, and once aromatic, stir in the Italian seasoning, and add in the cup of ale; allow the ale to simmer vigorously for about 5 minutes or so, until it reduces and thickens slightly.

Sprinkle in the remaining 2 tablespoons of the flour and whisk to blend, followed by the hot beef stock; stir together and then bring to a simmer over medium heat, allowing the soup to simmer uncovered for about 20-22 minutes so that it slightly reduces.

Turn off the heat and return the browned steak back into the pot with it’s juices; allow the soup to sit for about 5 minutes or so before serving, just to allow the steak to cook through a bit more in the heat of the soup (you want it to remain tender—medium-rare to medium—and not become overcooked).

Finish with the parsley and the thyme, ladle into bowls, and enjoy with some crusty bread and a cold ale!

The more you understand about how your body works, the easier it is to get the results you want. Here, weight loss doctors explain how body fat works and the best ways to reduce it for your long-term well-being.

What is body fat, exactly?

“An individual’s body fat is a collection of adipose tissue that functions as a complex, metabolically active organ,” explains Wickham B. Simonds, MD, fellow of the Obesity Medicine Association and president of Dr. Simonds Metabolics and Weight Loss in Durham, North Carolina. “It is so much more than ‘cushioning’ or ‘insulation.’ Like any organ, adipose tissue can become diseased and dysfunctional if the organ becomes too large.” In fact, a 2019 study in the European Heart Journal found that excess body fat can lead to at least nine different cardiovascular problems, including aortic valve stenosis, a condition in which the valve leading out of the heart to the rest of the body is no longer able to open properly.

Most of the time when we say “body fat,” we’re referring to subcutaneous fat and visceral fat. “Subcutaneous fat is located under the skin, such as in the arm, thigh, and abdomen—what you feel when you pinch the skin,” says Peter Jian, MD, diplomate of the American Board of Obesity Medicine, and assistant professor at Baylor College of Medicine. “Visceral fat is located inside the abdominal cavity and around organs such as the gut and liver.” While both types of fat contribute to the size of your waist, Dr. Jian notes that visceral fat carries a higher risk of developing various health conditions such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease. “A healthy range of body percentage for adult women should be below 32 percent, and for men below 25 percent,” says Dr. Jian.

What’s the best way to get rid of body fat?

Eat healthier. Both diet and exercise play a role in the amount of body fat you have, but diet has a bigger impact. “The most effective way to reduce body fat is calorie reduction paired with reduced carbohydrate intake,” says Dr. Simonds. When you eat a simple carbohydrate that gets digested quickly (like white bread, rice, or pasta), it causes a spike in insulin that puts the body in a “fat storage” mode, he explains. However, everyone’s body is unique so the same exact eating plan won’t work for everyone. Before risking a fad diet, talk to a physician who is certified in weight loss management so they can help you choose an eating plan that’s safe and effective.

Prioritize your mental health. Don’t underestimate the power of being in a solid mental state. “We tend to make less healthy decisions about food when we are under stress or feel down,” says Dr. Jian. “Our emotional well-being also affects hormones that regulate hunger, satiety, and whether our bodies utilize or store fat.” Not only that, eating high-calorie foods when we’re stressed results in more weight gain than eating those same comfort foods when we’re not overwhelmed, according to a 2019 study in the journal Cell Metabolism.

Exercise more. The American Heart Association recommends 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week for the average adult, or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise. “While this may not be possible for everybody due to various constraints, you can always start by ‘getting moving,’” says Dr. Jian. You’ve heard it all before: Park your car farther away from your destination, use stairs instead of elevators, take a lunchtime walk, do sit-ups during commercial breaks. It sounds repetitive, but “all of these physical activities add up, and really help your body reduce body fat percentage,” says Dr. Jian.

How do you know if you’re actually losing body fat?

Use a measuring tape. “Measure your abdominal circumference at the belly button,” suggests Dr. Simonds. “When your body fat is decreasing, this measurement always decreases and it is indicative of the fact that you are decreasing the worst kind of fat—deep abdominal fat.”

Step on a scale. Many scales today, especially smart ones like the Fitbit Aria 2, measure body fat using a principle called bioelectrical impedance. While the body fat measurements on these types of home scales aren’t super accurate, they can give you a good estimate of your body fat percentage and there are things you can do to make the measurements more precise. “Weigh yourself first thing in the morning, before doing any exercise, in a well-hydrated state, without clothing or jewelry, and with your stomach, bowels, and bladder as empty as possible,” says Dr. Simonds.

yourinfohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17413307964382270798noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1219363873824888739.post-9037340079809032142019-09-28T08:57:00.000-07:002020-01-13T03:06:39.216-08:00Personal Trainer Reveals How Much You Should Exercise to Lose Weight and The Best Workout For Each Body TypeSydney-based personal trainer Rachael Attard says the optimum amount of exercise is different for every person, and overdoing it in the gym could actually be causing you more harm than good.

The women's fitness expert revealed how much you should be exercising to lose weight and shared an inside look at the best workout for each body type.

HOW MUCH EXERCISE IS NEEDED FOR WEIGHT LOSS AND TONING?

As a rule, Attard said consistent weight loss requires five days a week commitment.

"If you really want to see results and continue to make progress, I would recommend that you work out around five days a week with one or two rest days," she said.

To shed those last stubborn pounds and tone up all over, Rachael recommended a combination of cardio and resistance training, some low-intensity and some high-intensity exercises.

Low-intensity workouts like swimming, jogging, power walking and cycling burn fat and help you stay lean. High-intensity workouts like weight training, interval training, sprinting and long-distance running build muscle and tone the core, arms and legs.

"One without the other leaves a huge gap in your fitness routine," Attard explained.

THE BEST WORKOUTS FOR EACH BODY TYPE

Ectomorph: Ectomorphs are naturally slim with little body fat, which means they don't need much cardio to stay lean. However, because cardio is good for overall body function and cardiovascular health, Attard advised fitting in two to three low-intensity cardio sessions a week alongside three to five resistance workouts. Ectomorphs should focus on body weight exercises and HIIT sessions with at least one recovery day a week.

Mesomorph: Mesomorphs can lose and gain weight relatively easily, which means their bodies respond quickly to diet and exercise. Attard recommended regular low-impact cardio for mesomorphs to keep them lean, as well as three resistance training sessions a week to help shed fat fast. Mesomorphs should have one recovery day per week.

Endomorph: Endomorphs naturally have a higher fat and muscle content than their ecto and meso counterparts. Endomorphs build muscle easily, but also find fat difficult to lose which means a large dose of low-impact cardio like walking is important to keep weight off. Attard said endomorphs should avoid running or other high-intensity cardio exercises, as this can build unwanted bulk in the legs. She advised combining this with three sessions of resistance training per week, using light weights with high reps. Endomorphs should avoid heavy exercises like squats, lunges, dead lifts and burpees. One active recovery day is recommended.

RULES FOR FIRST TIME FITNESS ENTHUSIASTS

While it might be tempting to dive head first into six days a week of rigorous training, Attard said it's best to ease into a new fitness routine. To start, she recommended three to four days a week of solid exercise taking one or two days rest in between.

"This lets your muscles recover and gives you a chance to start making strides without pushing yourself to the point of injury," she said.

For first time fitness enthusiasts, Attard suggested trying yoga or mid-intensity hiking as an efficient method of burning calories without straining the body.

EXERCISING TWICE A DAY - YAY OR NAY?

According to Attard, upping your exercise game with two workouts a day is all fine, depending on your fitness levels.

She said while twice daily sessions might be too much for beginners, adding a second workout could help more seasoned gym bunnies overcome a frustrating weight loss plateau.

For those injecting a second workout into their day, Attard recommended a low to moderate intensity cardio session in the morning followed by an evening of resistance training.

yourinfohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17413307964382270798noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1219363873824888739.post-23268148991812416662019-09-28T08:26:00.000-07:002020-01-13T03:06:39.472-08:00This mom of 4 Lost 115 Lbs, and Still Ate a Treat Every Night #fitness #weightlossAs a Mom of 4, Mandi Lost 115 Pounds With BBG and Still Ate a Treat Every Night

For the moms out there, you'll be able to relate to Mandi Jane Wilson (@mandi_wilson_fitness on Instagram), a 34-year-old mom who gained weight during her pregnancies. At one point, Mandi reached almost 300 pounds, then lost 140 pounds, regained weight again with two more pregnancies, and was able to lose 115 pounds.

Mandi's History With Weight and Fitness

Growing up, Mandi was a dancer, and although she stayed pretty active, she didn't really have any knowledge of nutrition or how to eat well. "I really started having a hard time with weight gain when I became pregnant at 20. That pregnancy ended in a miscarriage, and I had my first child at age 22," Mandi said.

She had gained 50 pounds with that pregnancy, and combined with the weight she gained from her first pregnancy, Mandi was 80 pounds overweight. "I thought that the weight would 'just come off' with breastfeeding, and it did not," Mandi said.

When her son was around 1 year old, Mandi started working out at home with videos and eating healthier, and she said, "I lost around 25 pounds before becoming pregnant again. That pregnancy ended in a late-term miscarriage."

Mandi's Weight-Loss Journey Begins

At age 25, Mandi started her weight-loss journey at around 295 pounds in November 2010 after a family vacation to Knott's Berry Farm. Her youngest son was 5 months old, and she knew she had baby weight to lose but was in denial about how much. When she tried to take her 3-year-old son on a children's ride and couldn't get the seat belt buckled around herself, they asked her to exit. "I knew at that point that I had to change something," Mandi said.

"I tried things off and on that I couldn't stick to because I wasn't realistic about my goals or expectations," Mandi said. In June 2011, after seeing her son's first birthday photos and realizing she was nowhere near where she needed to be, she made a huge life change with health and fitness.

That month, she started by committing to working out 20 out of 30 days and monitoring her calories every day using My Fitness Pal. "I lost 140 pounds in two years," she said. "Forty the first year and 100 the second when I got serious about changing my lifestyle."

That wasn't the only big weight loss Mandi experienced. Mandi got pregnant in 2012 and had her third child in 2013. She gained 80 pounds and lost 60 pounds before getting pregnant with her fourth child in 2015. She gained 90 pounds through that pregnancy, which she said was difficult. Six months after her fourth child was born, Mandi lost 115 pounds in about a year and four months.

Mandi's Diet

Mandi follows a low-fat, high-protein, moderate-carb diet because it's what makes her body feel best. She counts calories using My Fitness Pal and aims for around 1,500 to 1,800 calories a day, depending on how much she's worked out.

"I have used some meal plans as guides on and off such as the @fitnesscarli meal plan and @cleansimpleeats but have never followed those as prescribed. I usually take inspiration from them and use some of their recipes," Mandi said.

What Mandi Eats in a Day
Here's a typical day of eating for Mandi:

Breakfast/before workout: 100-calorie oatmeal with some fruit and Zipfizz, which is an energy drink mix-powder ("I use Zipfizz as a pre-workout as most pre-workouts are much too strong for me.")

Post-workout snack: protein bar (usually a Fit Crunch bar because they are her favorite) and BCAAs

Lunch: carrots, spinach, and other veggies with a light salad dressing and a chicken sandwich (Thinwich bun, Laughing Cow light cheese spread on the bun topped with rotisserie chicken heated in the oven)

Afternoon snack: homemade peanut butter protein balls or yogurt and fruit

Dinner: protein (frequently chicken or fish), brown rice, and lots of veggies like mushrooms, asparagus, broccoli, etc.

Treat: She has a small treat each night like a Ghirardelli chocolate square, a small Lenny and Larry's protein cookie, or Jo Jo's Chocolate Bark. As she lost weight and improved her aerobic ability, she started going up to 40 minutes a day.

She then added in things like indoor cycling and pump classes. Then a few years ago, Mandi discovered BBG and added that into her daily workouts. Now, Mandi lifts at the gym with her husband four days a week and teaches two Spin classes, and she said, "I do BBG at home in my basement home gym. I either do one of the strength workouts or I walk on my treadmill at home."

How Mandi Stays Motivated

Working out and eating healthy have really helped Mandi's overall health and wellness. "I was very unhealthy before, constantly sick; I felt sick to my stomach almost nightly. I wasn't able to play with my kids or do the things I wanted with my family. The changes that I have seen in my overall well-being keep me motivated," Mandi said.

Mandi loves the life she has now. She's happier and generally healthy throughout the year. If she does get sick, she said, it's so much easier on her.

"I can do anything I want. From hiking to swimming to riding rides at amusement parks. I don't feel held back. My mental health has improved so much. These things keep me motivated daily. Knowing what I used to feel like compared to how I feel now is a huge motivator," Mandi said.

Mandi's Nonscale Victories

Here's a list of Mandi's nonscale victories:

"Putting on my wedding dress again and having it fit. It just wasn't realistic from where I began," Mandi said. So she started small by just counting calories and slowly incorporating fitness.

Her second piece of advice is to stay consistent. Sure. Kitchen cupboards? Do them regularly. But the washing machine? I didn’t even consider that a thing that could get dirty. Of course, that’s the wrong approach to have.

Most bacteria can survive if you’re washing at low temperatures. What’s more, they thrive in the conditions. The first thing you should do is open the compartment you usually pour detergent powder/liquid into. If you notice mold, wash it out.

2. Pour 6 litres of water into the drum. Now mix half a bag of ascorbic acid with half a serving of citric acid in warm water, and pour that into the drum as well.

3. Start a long program with both prewash, main wash and extra rinse, all at least 194 degrees Fahrenheit (or as hot as the washing machine can run).

4. Open and empty the filter.

5. Now add 6 detergent tablets to the washing machine, and run on the same program as last time.

6. Take a sponge and clean the opening of the washing machine.

7. Add 6 more detergent tablets and run a third program!

8 .Now just watch how clean the interior of your machine gets. It will work wonders with all your dirty clothes.
